In 1909 President Fallières signed a Decree delimiting the Armagnac Appelation Controlée Area which is divided into three regions. Bas-Armagnac, Ténarèze and Haut Armagnac.

Today only Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze produce wines for distillation. More than 20.000 hectares of vineyards worked with traditional grapes such as Piquepoul and Folle Blanche to which Colombard and Ugniblanc have been added. Only white wines produced from these specific grape varieties maybe used for making Armagnac.
